No More Excuses For Your Home Design

Humans are masters of making excuses. Let's face it, it's easier to make an excuse for why something won't work rather than find a way - which may involve a bit more money, time, and energy - to make it work. However, there are a few things in life you should never settle for. And one of these is your home design.

You've made the decision to build your dream home, something you've fantasized about for years. Sure, it might be "easy" to flip through a book of prefabricated layouts and chose one that you think might fit your lifestyle the best; a design surely countless others have chosen before you. But is that truly the best use of your money? After all, are you not planning to spend decades, if not the rest of your life in this home? So, why settle?

Houses are not simply a collection of rooms jammed together to keep us sheltered from the elements. Your home is where you build the foundation for the rest of your life, where memories are made, where you nurture your family, dreams, and creative pursuits. It is your grounding spot, your moment of zen, your safe haven. It is the center of calm, even in its most chaotic state, in the middle of the storm that is the world.

With that said, have you given thought to how you will function within this ideal space? What rooms do you envision yourself using the most often? And where are these rooms located with respect to the other areas of the house? Is there a special feature you desire such as a work studio, mud room, library, etc.? Is a closet you could live in part of your dream? It is details such as these and many more that make your home unique to you and your "perfect" dwelling space.

Now, here come the excuses...

A custom home is too expensive.

There's just far too much work that goes into a custom home.

I want it built yesterday.

I'm too busy to take the time to make all of those decisions...

Yes, with a custom home design you'll spend a wee bit more money. No, the house won't be slapped together in a week with sub-par construction you'll probably have to repair in a year or two's time. Yes, you'll have to make those laborious decisions on the exquisite little details that will go in to making your home original and perfect. But, in the end, you will have the home of your dreams which works perfectly with your life, a structure you can be proud of for years to come!

How many times have you walked into someone's house and heard them apologize for some aspect of their home? How many times have you done it yourself?

"I'm so sorry the dining room is so small. We'll have to eat out here..."

"I'm so sorry the kitchen is so small. It's only big enough for 1 person at a time..."

"We wanted (X) but the house didn't come with one..."

"I'm so sorry you have to walk through my bedroom to get to the bathroom..."

"Sorry about that pile of stuff. We just don't have enough storage..."

Sound familiar? If it does, it's time to stop making excuses about your home design! Stop squeezing your life into someone else's definition of functionality. It doesn't work. Plain and simple. Why else do you often hear pre-fab homes referred to as "starter homes"? They aren't meant for you to stay forever. When you engage an architect who understands your lifestyle and has your best interest at heart, you'll find yourself living in the house of your dreams.

All of this said... Let's start building your dream home today! :)
